'The last stretch proved absolutely grueling': UK pair complete epic journey in Australia after rowing across Pacific Ocean

A final 24-hour stretch. One more session navigating the pitiless slide. One more day of blistered hands clutching relentless paddles.

But after more than 8,000 nautical miles on the water – a monumental half-year voyage through Pacific waters that included close encounters with whales, failing beacons and chocolate shortages – the waters delivered a last obstacle.

Powerful 20-knot gusts off Cairns repeatedly forced their compact craft, their rowing boat Velocity, off course from land that was now painfully near.

Loved ones gathered on land as a planned midday arrival became 2pm, followed by 4pm, then twilight hours. Finally, at 6.42pm, they arrived at the Cairns marina.

"The concluding hours proved absolutely punishing," Rowe expressed, at last on firm earth.

"The wind was pushing us off the channel, and we truly doubted we would succeed. We drifted outside the navigational path and considered swimming the remaining distance. To at last reach our destination, after talking about it for so long, proves truly extraordinary."

The Monumental Voyage Commences

The UK duo – 28-year-old Rowe and 25-year-old Payne – departed from Lima, Peru on 5 May (an initial attempt in April was stopped by equipment malfunction).

During 165 ocean days, they covered approximately 50 sea miles each day, working as a team through daytime hours, single rower overnight while her partner rested a bare handful of hours in a confined sleeping area.

Survival and Challenges

Nourished by 400kg of preserved provisions, a saltwater conversion device and a vessel-based sprout cultivation system, the duo depended upon a less-than-reliable solar system for limited energy demands.

For much of their journey through the expansive ocean, they've had no navigation equipment or signaling devices, turning them into a "ghost ship", almost invisible to other vessels.

The duo faced nine-meter waves, traversed marine highways and weathered furious gales that, periodically, silenced all of their electronics.

Groundbreaking Success

Yet they continued paddling, stroke by relentless stroke, across blazing hot days, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They achieved an unprecedented feat as the initial female duo to row across the South Pacific Ocean, continuously and independently.

Additionally they collected over eighty-six thousand pounds (A$179,000) benefiting the outdoor education charity.

Life Aboard

The pair did their best to stay connected with society beyond their small boat.

Around day one-forty, they declared a "cocoa crisis" – down to their last two bars with over 1,000 miles remaining – but permitted themselves the luxury of unwrapping a portion to mark the English squad's triumph in global rugby competition.

Personal Reflections

Payne, originating from Yorkshire's non-coastal region, had not been at sea before her solo Atlantic crossing in 2022 in a record time.

She has now mastered another ocean. Yet there were periods, she admitted, when failure seemed possible. As early as day six, a route across the globe's vastest waters felt impossible.

"Our power was dropping, the water-maker pipes burst, however following multiple fixes, we achieved an alternative solution and simply continued struggling with little power during the final expedition phase. Whenever issues arose, we just looked at each other and went, 'of course it has!' Yet we continued forward."

"Jess made an exceptional crewmate. What was great was that we worked hard together, we problem-solved together, and we were always working towards the same goals," she stated.

Rowe is from Hampshire. Preceding her ocean conquest, she rowed the Atlantic, hiked England's South West Coast Path, ascended Mount Kenya and pedaled across Spanish terrain. There might still be more.

"Our collaboration proved incredibly rewarding, and we're eagerly anticipating future expeditions together as well. Another teammate wouldn't have worked."
