Football Association of Ireland Approves Resolution Seeking European Football Ban on Israel
Ireland's football governing body has voted in favor to present a official proposal to European football's governing body, calling for the banning of Israeli football from all European team and national tournaments.
Basis of the Proposed Suspension
The resolution, that had been proposed by Dublin club Bohemians, highlighted claimed breaches by the IFA of two important European football regulations.
- Failure to implement and enforce an effective policy against racism.
- Establishment of football teams in occupied Palestinian territories lacking the approval of the Palestinian Football Association.
Ballot Results and Future Actions
According to an announcement from the Irish FA, the proposal was backed by 74 votes, with seven opposed and 2 abstentions.
The association intends to formally submit this motion to the UEFA's decision-making body, asking for the prompt ban of the Israel Football Association from European tournaments.
In an extraordinary general meeting of the Football Association of Ireland, an ordinary resolution was posed to delegates. It was approved by a majority.
Earlier Uefa Deliberations
The European body had earlier paused intentions to ban Israeli football at the end of September, following the announcement of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for the region.
While they never publicly stated considering an extraordinary meeting on the matter, plans were believed to be quite advanced.
Global Context
This Irish resolution follows comparable calls in September from the leaders of both Turkey and Norway's football associations for banning Israel from international competition.
These appeals were issued after UN specialists asked Fifa and Uefa to suspend the Israeli FA, citing a UN commission of inquiry report that claimed the country of acts of genocide during the Gaza conflict.
The Israeli government has rejected these claims and described the report as scandalous.
Potential Consequences
If Uefa choose to ban the IFA, it would probably create tension with the United States government – co-hosts for the 2026 World Cup – which is firmly against such an measure.
Even though Uefa has the power to suspend Israeli teams from European competitions, it may not be able to prevent them from taking part in qualification for the World Cup, which falls under world football's governing body.
